Paris, Jean Baptiste Loyson 1659 full-page copperplate engravings (65 of 67 -the missing plates are laid in in facsimile) Emblems are numbered but number 52 IS SKIPPED & it is also omitted in the contents list ) Many plates are signed Briot or Marie Briot. 8vo speckled roan on 4 raised bands spine gilt (edges and corners worn (abime)/hinges held by cords/missing half of the lower compartment and quite some leather loss along hinges however covers are still well attached) Frontispiece + titlepage +(10p=Preface) +(8p contents) +half title to verso of first emblem.LACKS emblem 5 and the text on its recto. plate 19 is damaged but verso is blank at this point so no loss of text. Page 249 faces plate 19 and is stained where the damage was repaired but is still well readable. Plates are numbered from 1 to 68 but there is no number 52 and the contents list also omits any number 52 but the pagination & signatures follow through without a gap. The title has an ownership partly crossed through and a bookplate seems to have been removed from the pastedown.Some 8 leaves at the front have some marginal small wormholes and a corner is torn off page 339/340 just affecting 2 letters of the bottom line on each side. Usual foxing but also a few gatherings browned and two plates with ink marks.Chetham's Library says the plates are after Alciatus and also confirms that the number 52 is omitted.

Makers mark.Very clean fine copy with the strong impressions and a very low number attesting to an early copy of this edition.

Cnobbari 1st edition 1639 Emblem copperplates (50) by Andries (signed in emblem p84 as Pauli ie) Pauwels + an Engraved titlepage by Theodore van Merlen all engraved by Abraham van Diepenbeeck who was a pupil of Rubens. . Quarto newer full levant morocco blindtooled on 4 raised bands spine compartments gilt and gilt titled spine. Engraved titlepage +[xxvi] +249pp +[27]pp with Errata list at end of index. The preliminary leaves are misbound within gathering ** & *** but all the preliminaries are present. The title is a bit cropped just into the printed frame-line and the top margin is a bit short in the rest of the book but not touching any headlines or page numbers etc. The other margins are all well clear of printed side notes, text & illustrations. A few early neat ink underlinings & Latin comments. Two leaves are remargined affecting only blank areas (1cm of margin affected) and 4 blank corners restored not affecting any print. A few tears all without loss & professionally repaired. In all this is a nice clean copy with the text in handsome typography enhanced by large tailpiece decorations, with the copperplates in strong impressions. *A very collectable EMBLEM BOOK (Praz 292 Landwehr 72 Brunet I,1405).

Half-title and engraved Titlepage dated 1656 to OUDERDOM en BUYTEN-LEVEN +[xxiv]+261pp +[3]pp; HOF-GEDACHTEN (with Titlepage dated 1655) and INVALLENDE GEDACHTEN (with half-title) 125+[3]pp; KONINGKLYKE HERDERIN ASPASIA (with Titlepage and extra frontis plate) [4]+84pp; HUWELIJCX FUYCK (with half-title) 32pp; and DOODT-KISTE voor de LEVENDIGE (with half-title) 224pp. A few tears to margins not affecting printed area, some with marginal paper loss, and light marginal damp-staining towards the end. *Narrative poetry by the foremost writer of the 17th century Dutch Republic with many fine engravings of city and country life (by or after van de Venne) and a short series of Dances of Death. First editions here of most of the works written near the end of Cats's life at his country estate near The Hague, Sorgh-vliet or "escape from care", which is illustrated in the centre of the fine frontis to the whole collection.

Vienna & Nurnberg Germany, Georg Lehmann 1721 Frontispiece with a party of six sitting under a tree near their hut with a cook preparing a meal in a tent beyond +29 Floral & other initial letters 30 x 30mm + a few large handsome tail-pieces. . 4to brown leather on 4 raised bands with gilt rules and light tan spine label gilt titled [edges worn /lacking approx. 1cm at the head and foot of spine/ hinges cracking but both covers held by all cords and head-bands/ covers are thus well attached] Frontispiece + titlepage in red and black +[8pp = approbation, Privilege and Preface} + [4pp =contents] + 473pp + [37pp =index] The front free endpaper has a tearout to remove and inscription and the foot of the page there is a marginal worm tack which decreases until it ends with the last page of the contents. It just touches three letters of one word of the privilege however it just encroaches on the fore-ground of the frontis.where it makes a 1cm V shaped track not touching any of the figures, just the floor] The verso of the title + page 92 have a 2cm round purple library stamp of "S.Maria D.Lacum" The titlepage has an old ink name crossed out to the upper outer margin and "Specto ad biblio" written to the opposide margin and there are also a few ink slurps in pale brown. The text is decorated with floral initial letters [28 of them]and a few handsome, large head- and tail-pieces.The text has quite some foxing throughout and some gatherings have the text block with a uniform tanning to the text area showing that the ink used had an acidic content. The paper is still entirely sound and not brittle. There are side notes throughout the book and they are nowhere cropped having a good 2cm clear margin to the sides.No tears, no loose pages and no writing except to the titlepage.

All plates with captions in Latin, Dutch & French. Endpapers browned, 1st engraved title very slightly chipped at fore-edge, a few small marginal tears without loss, otherwise beautifully clean throughout with the two complete sets of 51 plates interleaved in the text following each engraved titlepage. *Rare complete edition (the 2 parts are often found separately) of this emblem book by the Jesuit Jan David (De Backer/Sommervogel II 1847-48 nr.10, BCNI 6514).

Frontis + titlepage printed in red & black with printer's device of cherubs blowing up a storm at sea +[10]pp prelims with emblem index +514pp +[28]pp index with Finis & colophon. Small stamps of Quebec convent on flyleaf, back of frontis & with perforated stamp on title, neat ownership inscriptions of 2 Pastors dated 1799-1800 on flyleaf and name of one Correns repeated in margin of title. First and last few pages foxed else neat and clean throughout. *Nicely executed emblems, showing ships, mythical beasts, plants, animals incl. bats, birds, scientific tools, musical instruments etc. each within a decorative oval frame with caption above. The explanations of these emblems - none of which are in themselves religious - all relate to Mary mother of Jesus (see Landwehr 319 Praz 351 for third edition).

Sold by the Gotta'schen Buchhandlung. 1st First edition 1846 Engraved titlepage & 36 Steelplates +steel engraved Register with miniatures by Wilhelm von Kaulbach engraved by R. Rahn & Schleich plus woodengravings in. Large quarto morocco leather BINDING with gilt-tooled fox pretending to be penitent while the cock reads the indictment for his crimes in gilt barock frame to cover and gilt barock floral centerpiece and gilt frame to lower cover with blind tooling (edges worn and sl.scuffing but gilt bright) 257pp. Margins of first few leaves foxed/stained, page 5/6 remargined and the plate following remargined to gutter edge and top edge, two other text pages remargined but in no case does this affect any printed areas not even the double ruled lines that enclose all the pages. There is some foxing as usual and some signs of use. The endpapers are embossed pale yellow but the edges show a bit of oxidization. *Includes plate at pg.45 which was later suppressed. Although not a pristine copy it is quite scarce, especially with the key register plate that was often removed by the binders and especially in this top of the range publisher's binding. *The fable of a cheating, lying fox who pretends remorse for his deeds and relies on a glib tonque and flattery to get him out of trouble but is finally brought to book for his misdeeds.
